1964 Impala Rear Differential Info:

  • 1964 Chevy Impalas came with a 8.2" 10 bolt "drop out style" rear axle / differential.
  • Ring gear bolts are 3/8 x 24 and there are 10 of them.
  • The pinion nut should be 1 1/8"
  • The axles are 17 spline and bolt to the axle housing on the ends near the brakes.
  • The build date for the rear end / differential can be found stamped on center section of it, drivers side, front. It begins with a letter that corresponds to a month (A = Jan, B = Feb, C= Mar, etc.) After that are two digits, which is the day of the month. The last is a single digit for the year (2 = 1962, 3 = 1963, 4 = 1964). Example: C124 = March,12, 1964.
  • In 1964, some of these differentials were Limited Slip (Posi), but most passenger cars were open differentials.
